Game Changer

Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

Since our inception, Upstate Forever has worked to promote greenways across the Upstate. In 1998 we launched a campaign urging Greenville County to acquire a rail line that had recently gone on the market and convert it to a trail through the Rails-to-Trails process. Nearly a decade later, through the tireless efforts of many citizens – Upstate Forever staff members included – the first section of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail was built. Today it is one of the most widely celebrated greenways in the country.

More recently, we partnered with private and governmental stakeholders to jumpstart the process of connecting downtown Greenville to CU-ICAR and the rest of the Millennium Campus by extending the Swamp Rabbit Trail from Cleveland Park. We also worked to ensure that communities along that corridor are safely connected to the trail by advocating for development of the first-ever Greenville County pedestrian and bicycle plan, adopted as the Greenville County Safe Routes to School, Recreation and Work Plan in March 2016.
