Sustainable Communities Program staff advocate and implement projects, plans, and sensible growth policies that create vibrant communities where Upstate citizens can live, work, and play.
In 2006, Upstate Forever partnered with the Home Builders Association of Greenville to bring the EarthCraft House program to South Carolina through the construction of “Upstate House,” a single-family live/work residence in Greenville that meets all EarthCraft and Energy Star standards. Homeowner Carlton Owen chronicled his experiences and lessons learned in this blog, providing an in-depth look at the history, plans, decisions and actions involved in creating Upstate House and the adjacent Woodland Garden.
In 2008, Upstate Forever completed a to-the-studs green renovation of its main office in Greenville. The project received EarthCraft certification and LEED certification at the highest level (Platinum). It was the first LEED Platinum project in the Upstate and only the third one in South Carolina. See the Upstate Advocate article, “Greenovation Complete!” for more information. We have an open door policy and would welcome you, your business colleagues or friends for a tour. Or download our Self-Guided Tour booklet to learn more about the project; see details about the products, suppliers, and contractors; and get a list of the native plants incorporated in our landscaping.
